Bjork, Cyan Racing Lynk & Co Dominate Sydney Practice
Sweden’s Thed Bjork has claimed early bragging rights for the Kumho Tyre TCR World Tour fraternity, topping both practice sessions for the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series at Sydney Motorsport Park.
The 2017 World Touring Car Champion set a 1m 34.7565s with just over ten minutes left in Practice Two, a marker that was over a second quicker than the rest of the field, headed at the time by Will Brown in the MPC Team LIQUI MOLY Audi.
Bjork’s Cyan Racing Lynk & Co teammate Santiago Urrutia wound up second for the session, the Uruguayan just over a tenth of a second off the pace, with Spain’s Mikel Azcona completing the outright top three for BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse.
The first of the Australians was reigning TCR Australia champion Tony D’Alberto, who finished fourth in his brand-new Honda Civic FL5, just over three tenths behind Bjork.
Brown finished second of the Australians in seventh outright, ahead of Ben Bargwanna’s Burson Auto Parts Racing Peugeot in eighth outright, both just over a second off the pace.
In the day’s first practice session, it was an all Cyan Racing Lynk & Co affair, with the top four positions being filled by the Swedish team.
Bjork topped the session, followed by Frenchman Yann Ehrlacher, Urrutia, and Ma Qing Hua of China, whilst the top TCR Australia competitor was the United Kingdom’s Tom Oliphant, who steered the Autoglym / Ashley Seward Motorsport Lynk & Co to eighth outright.
Brown and D’Alberto completed the TCR Australia top three in ninth and tenth outright respectively.
Valvoline Racing GRM driver Kody Garland brought out the red flags when he crashed at the exit of turn one with eleven minutes left in the session, the resulting damage ruling the Peugeot out for the remainder of the weekend.
The combined Kumho Tyre TCR World Tour and Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series field return to the track for qualifying at 6:00pm AEDT, before the historic first TCR World Tour race in Australia takes place under lights at 8:40pm.
