Tony D’Alberto and Honda breakthrough at the Mountain
Three years after re-entering the Australian motorsport scene, Honda Australia alongside Tony D’Alberto and achieved the ultimate by winning the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia title.
D’Alberto finished runner up in the inaugural season of 2019 as this year was confronted by an imposing mix of young drivers and experienced hands ready to take the title fight to the wire, in which it did.
The title may have been the main aim, but winning his first race in the category was another priority and this was achieved at Queensland Raceway as D’Alberto scored another the very next day to solidify his series credentials.
A tough two rounds at Sandown and the Supercheap Auto Bathurst International followed warranting an emotional response from D’Alberto post-race.
“We’ve worked hard and last weekend was ultra tough,” D’Alberto reflected.
“We had our hands tied with this car around there and the boys kept trying to pump me up all weekend right until the end there.
“I didn’t even know we had it until I stopped in Parc Ferme there.
“To do it like that, it was absolutely nerve wracking right there at the end, I was giving it everything I had. Obviously, we didn’t have the car speed, but to win like that I don’t know if it makes it more special, we gave it everything and I’m thrilled to get the win.
“It’s been a big journey for myself, Honda Australia and Wall Racing. I had to convince Honda to get involved back in 2019 and I’m just so proud and thankful that we’ve delivered the title for it.
“It is pretty special, it’s a tough this series and it’s not a very natural driving style, so I’ve had to work really hard. My engineer Fyfey (David Fyfe) had pushed me so hard and we’ve had a few tears along the way, but I’m really thankful for the team around me, they’ve just given it everything to get to this point.”
